Giant Artwork Reflects The Gorgeous Complexity of The Human Brain

together through some 100 trillion connections,

GREG DUNN AND BRIAN EDWARDS
A computer image of "Self Reflected," an etching of a human brain created by artists Greg Dunn and Brian Edwards.
Your brain has approximately 86 billion neurons joined together through some 100 trillion connections, giving rise to a complex biological machine capable of pulling off amazing feats. Yet it's difficult to truly grasp the sophistication of this interconnected web of cells.
Now, a new work of art based on actual scientific data provides a glimpse into this complexity.
The 8-by-12-foot gold panel, depicting a sagittal slice of the human brain, blends hand drawing and multiple human brain datasets from several universities. The work was created by Greg Dunn, a neuroscientist-turned-artist, and Brian Edwards, a physicist at the University of Pennsylvania, and goes on display Saturday at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. There will be a public unveiling and a lecture by the artists at 3 p.m.
"The human brain is insanely complicated," Dunn said. "Rather than being told that your brain has 80 billion neurons, you can see with your own eyes what the activity of 500,000 of them looks like, and that has a much greater capacity to make an emotional impact than does a factoid in a book someplace."

Artists Greg Dunn and Brian Edwards present their work at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
To reflect the neural activity within the brain, Dunn and Edwards have developed a technique called micro-etching: They paint the neurons by making microscopic ridges on a reflective sheet in such a way that they catch and reflect light from certain angles. When the light source moves in relation to the gold panel, the image appears to be animated, as if waves of activity are sweeping through it.
First, the visual cortex at the back of the brain lights up, then light propagates to the rest of the brain, gleaming and dimming in various regions -- just as neurons would signal inside a real brain when you look at a piece of art.
That's the idea behind the name of Dunn and Edwards' piece: "Self Reflected." It's basically an animated painting of your brain perceiving itself in an animated painting.
Here's a video (made by Will Drinker) to give you an idea of how the etched neurons light up as the light source moves:
To make the artwork resemble a real brain as closely as possible, the artists used actual MRI scans and human brain maps, but the datasets were not detailed enough. "There were a lot of holes to fill in," Dunn said. Several students working with the duo explored scientific literature to figure out what types of neurons are in a given brain region, what they look like and what they are connected to. Then the artists drew each neuron.

Dunn and Edwards then used data from DTI scans -- a special type of imaging that maps bundles of white matter connecting different regions of the brain. This completed the picture, and the results were scanned into a computer.
Using photolithography, the artists etched the image onto a panel covered with gold leaf. Then, they switched on the lights:

This is what "Self Reflected" looks like when it's illuminated with all white light.
"A lot of times in science and engineering, we take a complex object and distill it down to its bare essential components, and study that component really well" Edwards said. But when it comes to the brain, understanding one neuron is very different from understanding how billions of neurons work together and give rise to consciousness.
"Of course, we can't explain consciousness through an art piece, but we can give a sense of the fact that it is more complicated than just a few neurons," he added.
The artists hope their work will inspire people, even professional neuroscientists, "to take a moment and remember that our brains are absolutely insanely beautiful and they are buzzing with activity every instant of our lives," Dunn said. "Everybody takes it for granted, but we have, at the very core of our being, the most complex machine in the entire universe."

New Mexico scientist builds carbon dating machine that does not damage artifacts

SANTA FE, N.M. — The contraption he built looks a little like something you might see from “The Nutty Professor.”
But Marvin Rowe is no nut. That machine he built, and what it’s used for, helped Rowe win the prestigious Fryxell Award for Interdisciplinary Research from the Society of American Archeology two years ago.
“We call the process Low Energy Plasma Radiocarbon Sampling,” said New Mexico’s state archeologist Eric Blinman, who credits Rowe with inventing the process. “But a lot of people just refer to this as ‘Marvin’s Machine.'”

The process is important because, unlike other methods of radiocarbon dating that destroy the sample being tested, LEPRS preserves it. It also works on tiny samples – even a flake of ink or paint – and is considered a more accurate means of dating.
“With standard radiocarbon dating, there’s a risk of contamination of carbonates. They have to use acids and, within that process, you lose a large part of your sample and you destroy it,” Blinman explained. “But we now have the ability to date incredibly small amounts of carbon – 40-100 millionths of a gram – and that is the real revolutionary aspect of this. And the ancillary part of that is it’s non-destructive.”
That’s important to Nancy Akins, a research associate with the Office of Archaeological Studies, who in February was having a bison tooth and sheep bone tested by “Marvin’s Machine.” The items were excavated from the site of a rock shelter in Coyote Canyon north of Mora.
“It could be 500 years old or it could be 5,000 years old,” she said of the bison tooth, the result allowing her to complete her report of the site that she’s determined to have been used by humans as a hunting outpost starting 1,700 years ago.
“I’m just waiting on the dates, because it’ll change everything if we get dates where I can actually say, ‘OK, that’s what the sheep bones date to and that’s what the bison dates to.’ It tells us an awful lot about how they were using the land on the east side of the Sangre de Cristos.”
Because a lot of that part of New Mexico is private property or under land grants, such finds as the one in Coyote Canyon are rare, she said.
“Unless there’s a road or something, we don’t have any information at all. This is one of the very, very few sites in Mora County that have been excavated,” she said of the site reported by the state Department of Transportation.

And when she gets her answers and completes her report, she’ll still have the bison tooth and sheep bone.

One of a kind
Rowe won his Fryxell Award “based in his prominent role in developing methods for rock art dating and minimally-destructive dating of fragile organic artifacts,” as well as his scientific analysis, scholarship and student training, according to the SAA website.
The achievement has been decades in the making. Rowe and two colleagues at Texas A&M’s Department of Chemistry built the first plasma dating machine in 1990 while exploring ways to extract organic carbon from pictograph samples.
“Other people have been successful dating charcoal paintings,” Rowe explained. “But, in the United States at least, most of the paintings are not charcoal. Most of them that I’ve encountered are inorganic pigments and that’s where the importance of the small sample comes in.”
Blinman adds that, under the best of circumstances, standard radiocarbon dating requires 30 milligrams of carbon. Rock art pigments don’t have that much carbon in them. But “Marvin’s Machine” can date material 100 millionths of a gram or less.
Blinman said the process’s capability to date very small samples would allow, for instance, determination of the age of the ink on a Chinese text written on bamboo. “The people who will fake texts can get their hands on old bamboo,” he said. Normal carbon-dating can’t date the ink because it requires too large a sample. “We can flake off a piece” and date it, Blinman said. “If the ink is old, then it’s real.”
Rowe is probably the world’s foremost authority on radiocarbon rock art dating. He says much of what he learned was by trial and error. In fact, the first machine he and his Texas A&M colleagues built caught fire and was destroyed.
Currently, there are only three LEPRS machines in existence – one in Michigan and one in Arkansas, both procured by former students of Rowe – but the one at the lab located at the New Mexico Office of Archeological Studies off N.M. 599 in south Santa Fe is the most sophisticated.

“Marvin has learned so much from the previous two (machines) about their construction and their use that when we offered him space and the opportunity to build one here, it was sort of like he was able to do all the things he sort of wanted to do, but couldn’t under the circumstances of the research at Texas A&M,” said Blinman.
Using plasma to scrub artifacts
Traditional carbon dating estimates age based on content of carbon-14 (C-14), a naturally occurring, radioactive form of carbon, and requires destruction of an object. A piece of an organic object – a bone fragment or weaving, for example – is washed with acid at high temperature to remove impurities and then burned in a chamber.
The carbon dioxide gas produced is run through an accelerator mass spectrometer, which measures the decay of radioactive carbon 14 – the more the carbon 14 has decayed, the older the object is. Comparisons are also made with the amounts of C-14 expected to have existed in the atmosphere in the past.
Blinman explained that Rowe’s alternative process is based on plasmas – ionized gas made up of groups of positively and negatively charged particles, and one of the four fundamental states of matter, alongside solid, liquid and gas. Plasmas are used in television displays and in florescent lights, which use electricity to excite gas and create glowing plasma.
In Rowe’s non-destructive method, an entire artifact goes into in a vacuum chamber with a plasma. The gas gently scrubs or oxidizes the surface of the object to produce carbon dioxide – CO2 – for the C-14 analysis, without damaging the artifact.
“We can energize the plasmas so that they are really hot, but we can also tune them down so they are extremely gentle,” Blinman said as Rowe and his crew fired up their machine to test the bison tooth and sheep bone.
He showed a picture of a turkey feather that had been tested and hardly looks ruffled. “The experience of the artifact is no different than your body temperature or, worst case, Phoenix on a summer day,” he said.

The plasmas in Rowe’s machine are generated with radio frequencies, rather than electricity, and work like a cleaning agent to scrub off the CO2.
“We have to use the ultra pure gases because any contamination from modern, atmospheric CO2 is going to screw up the data. So he has bled off high-purity oxygen into a reservoir that we will then tap as we generate plasmas,” Blinman said.
And what’s unique about “Marvin’s Machine” is that it has five chambers, so multiple samples can be tested at once. “That helps our efficiency somewhat,” Rowe said. “To my knowledge, nobody has gotten more than one plasma running at one time.”
The Archaeology Institute of America’s Archaeology magazine named Rowe’s non-destructive dating method one of the Top 10 discoveries of 2010. It noted that he has refined the method to work on objects coated in sticky hydrocarbons, such as the resins that cover Egyptian mummy gauze.
“Archaeologists, meanwhile, are hailing the discovery as one of the most important in decades, particularly for issues surrounding the repatriation of human remains from Native American burials, which modern tribes don’t want to see harmed,” said the magazine.

Answers raise other questions
Fast forward a few months from Rowe’s demonstration for the Journal and the results are in. Blinman explains that, after the samples went through “Marvin’s Machine,” the results were sent to a lab in Zurich, Switzerland, for analysis.
“There are very few radiocarbon labs that will direct date carbon dioxide gas,” he said. “Other labs would turn it into graphite and that could add potential error to the system.”

The bottom line is that the bison tooth is most likely from between 530 and 685 AD, with 650 AD considered the mean average.
“It’s one of the earlier dates we have from that site,” said Akins, who now has most of the answers she needs to complete her report on the Coyote Canyon rock shelter. But it doesn’t answer all the questions.
What’s curious, she said, was that there’s bison tooth found there at all. The location is not a spot where buffalo would roam, so it was most likely brought there.
But why? If it were carried in as food supply, why weren’t there more buffalo bones found there? And why bring the head, from which little meat can be extracted?
“Ceremonialism is a pretty strong thing,” she said, purely speculating it could have been used for ceremonial purposes. She noted that deer heads have been found in kivas that date to later times.
And who brought it there in the first place?
“That’s a good question,” Akins said. “Back that early, we just don’t know.”
It could have been early Tewa people or nomadic groups coming in from the plains to escape the heat, she said, “but there’s no way of knowing. That early, we don’t put a label on it.”

The date returned on the sheep bone was a disappointment. It most likely is from the 1930s.
“What we were looking for there was something from the late 1800s or early 1900s,” she said.
The results suggest that people were still herding sheep in the area in the 1930s, “but sheep herders probably didn’t eat their own sheep,” she said.
“Marvin’s Machine” and the Low Energy Plasma Radiocarbon Sampling process doesn’t answer every question and sometimes raises more questions. But it can bring us closer to understanding our past.
“If you don’t really care about ordering history, you don’t care about dating,” Blinman said. “But if you want to order history, or you want to establish big-picture views about climate change and the extinction of Ice Age mammals and fauna, then this is one of the best tools we have available to us.”

The Media and critics should stop blind criticism of RSS

bbc

New Delhi. The Media and critics should stop blind criticism of RSS, said former BBC stalwart Mark Tully. He was speaking on the occasion of a book release titled “Modi & His Challenges”, penned by Rajiv Kumar.
BBC icon Mark Tully who was the voice and face of foreign media in India for many years, has welcomed the book saying that critics should stop RSS baiting and instead engage with it, endorsing a view that Rajiv Kumar expresses in the book.
Energy Minister Piyush Goyal was also present at book launch. Terming RSS as an organisation that focuses on reaching out to different segments of the society, particularly those in distress, he said RSS has never “told any of us that we have to either like or dislike” any other community or any other person who practises any other religion.
‘Modi & His Challenges’ offers a frank assessment of the Modi government over the past two years. It’s comprehensive in not only identifying the challenges, but also explaining Modi’s approach, and suggesting some course correction.
Rajiv Kumar, senior fellow at CPR, is an economist and the author of several books on the Indian economy and India’s national security. Dr. Kumar is also chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Economics and Politics in Pune and the founding director of Pahle India Foundation, a non-profit research organisation that specialises in policy-oriented research and analysis.
In an attempt to break the myths around Narendra Modi, the author attempts to take us through a journey of the leader’s life, his political aspirations, his growth within the party, his remarkable stint in Gujarat and his performance over the last two years in Delhi.
The author identifies the many formidable challenges Modi faces as the leader of the world’s largest democracy that is in the midst of a complex transition and recommends measures that Modi must implement to deliver on his promises, thereby enabling India to realize its true potential.

और अपनी wish-list में जो -जो items हैं उन्हें पूरा करो …..of course ये सब भी ZNMD का part है , but ये चीजें ZNMD का एक small fraction हो सकती हैं whole नहीं …. in reality ZNMD की philosophy इससे कहीं बढ़कर है और आज इस article में मैं इसी subject पर आपसे अपने thoughts share कर रहा हूँ .

                     Centum Epsom of failure

As the title of this book centum Epsom of failure
You can understand about me and my life and my nature
As the title of this book tell you all the things
That information about the hundreds of research of a failure student
If you read this book it not only encourage me and you
This encourages the mass of student and people too
People who have the great ideas about the science like you
Because the science is not only inside the book and inside the institution
Science is a broad scope of understanding
This emerged in the mind of people
That’s how to understand the management of nature,
The working principle of nature
Understanding of science and of their research is the different branch of the same tree
The people who have understanding of science they can do research
But the people who have not understanding of bookie science they can also do research,
You know two people understand very easily the science
First one if the people know the holy book and those who know the science book
Because the holy book like Veda says “माता भूमिः पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः” (Earth is our Mother & we her children).
They define the gravity and gravitational filed
We belong to a culture that believes in the Mantra and that is our huge resource of science
And understanding who can teach me lots and can be enrich us truly
I will share hundreds of contemplation with you and try to enrich you from science
It is not simple task to complete but, I have to complete this,
I am youngest member of science family so I have to do more for this family
And if you want to make scientist with my simple inducement so like to welcome you.
Yet i am not a very bad poet
So i say that,
"If have a query in your mind then the answer there have in your brain"
How and Why?
Practice to arise question in your mind that is the key of research
My aim is not to prove myself here but I want to say
When I had failed in one education system
Than after I was created a alternate education system
To give value of my time had not been for certificate
It’s done for knowledge only and knowledge enforce you to do something’s great

So they also enforce me to do something’s than after i start to write

*Knowledge is what?
Knowledge is form of energy which is the most powerful and complex among the complexity
Like fire which is unaffected or which have power to trap the gravity, like fire which goes always
Against the gravity knowledge makes your mind unstable and enforce you to do the something’s right or wrong,
But if any person who got the good society and family than that person mainly do right or apply
His knowledge in good work which give their society many things and on ground of social political and mantel level.
It is same as the theory of elemental chemistry which say less energy more stability and high energy less stability.
*What is love?
Attraction between two bodies
May be visible or invisible if with invisible that is devotion
Love is the great which has duel nature both fire and water they can teach you more from anything’s
And that is the great: D
There are two types of love
 Plane love and complex love
Plane love is those loves which encourage you and long lasting which is just like supplementary
That encourages you time to time when you are in bad time. This is just like water which gives you satisfaction.
But the complex love is that for which you have to prove yourself to enjoy the pleasure but, that is
Complimentary who give completion to you and that is like fire which is free from the gravity and
Never who always encourage you only by thinking the name of the person, may be by your
(1) Enemy,
(2) Big successful person or
(3) A girl or boy who not loves you
But you love her very much that’s has the very high energy and make your life unstable
Which is more profitable for you but really if the people understand that things than
He just achieve any goal of life by exchanging that love which is still in form of energy
And in Asian country like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal
The third types of energy is at pick level, and young people can use this resource,
Which is fire that’s always gives you kick to go up, but you need to recognize that energy and exchange it from your success,
this book is not going through litmus test but this is our on conclusion and can you say that is just a rough work and the people have a source now let's start to think and purified that open resource this is just Logistics and thinking of mind. in this chapter I want to give a task to you and now your responsibility to complete the task.
i already complete my task by writing this book.
hundreds of research collection is not an easy task or if i purified all myself than its goes to less motivate you, like before because I want you do work as a labor who just dig the minerals and expert purified it so it can help the scientist too and he feel have to do something’s less  and this book is not copy from  any other research or from a convenient source this is done in the absence of and this book is she found affected the idea all the copy or copy from copy from coffee any other research paper performances of a convenient source this is done in absence of data and instrument

                                                 Chapter 1
                                                 The sun
This is my own conclusion that planets not revolve around the sun according to my knowledge and concept the planet revolve apart from the Sun.
Because the entire planet takes energy from the Sun.
The planet move on the focus of sun but the main question is that if it move around the sun than why sun always looks as a rounded boll sometime it has to look rod shape

And if the planet  revolve around the sun than many time we have to see the planet eclipse many time but its not happen because planet revolve not around the sun srt

radious of sun=696000 km
radious of earth =6378 km
radious of venus =6052 km
light takes time to reach on earth =8 min 20 sec
distance between earth and sun= 150000000 km
speed of light=300000 km/sec
=500 sec
All the eight planet

1 Mercury radius =2440 km
2 Venus radius =6052 km
3 Earth radios =6371 km
4 Marks radious = 3390 km
5 Jupiter radious =69911 km
6 Saturn radious=58232 km
7 Uranus radious=25362 km
8 Neptune radious=24622 km
Planet
Distance
(from sun)
Diameter
Mercury
57,910,000 km
4,800 km
Venus
108,200,000 km
12,100 km
Earth
149,600,000 km
12,750 km
Mars
227,940,000 km
6,800 km
Jupitar
778,330,000 km
142,800 km
Saturn
1,424,600,000 km
120,660 km
Neptune
4,501,000,000 km
49,500 km
Pluto
5,945,900,000 km
3,300 km

149,600,000 km

www.thesisclimax.com www.shashibhushankumar.com
                         6378 km                                                                                                                       696000 km

Total =  6378 + 149,600,000 +  696000 =  150302378 km

                                150302378 km

So,  total time take to complete one revolution around the sun is =9.44
10^8 km
